Badri Raina

Badri Raina is a reputed commentator on politics, culture and society. His writings have appeared in nearly all major English dailies and journals in India and his columns on the ZNet website, a selection of which was published in 2012 as a book titled The Underside of Things: India and the World (A Citizen’s Miscellany, 2006-2011), have a global following. His book, Dickens and the Dialectic of Growth, published by the University of Wisconsin Press in 1986 is considered among the ten most regarded commentaries on the nineteenth-century British novelist, Charles Dickens and widely referred to in universities across the world.

Raina taught English Literature for some four decades at Kirori Mal College, University of Delhi and at the Department of English, Faculty of Arts, as guest faculty under the “cooperative teaching” scheme of the University, from where he retired in 2006. He was elected for two consecutive terms (1992-1996) to the Executive Council, University of Delhi. Long associated with the Democratic Teachers’ Front, he was its President for four years.
