Shastri Ramachandaran is an author, independent journalist, and editorial consultant whose work over more than five decades has taken him across India, China, and Europe. He writes on India-China relations and global affairs, with a sustained interest in democracy, development, social justice and the cultural forces that shape public life.
He is best known for Beyond Binaries: The World of India and China (2024). Over the years, he has worked in a range of journalistic roles—from reporter to editor—across eleven newspapers in India and abroad. His writing has appeared in leading publications including The Times of India, The Indian Express, The Tribune, Deccan Herald, DNA, China Daily, Global Times, Goteborg-Post, Politiken and Dagbladet Information. His last long stint in Beijing was as Senior Consultant and Editor of China-India Dialogue, published by China International Publishing Group. Beyond newspapers, he has contributed to magazines and journals, and to radio, television, documentaries, global wire services, and digital platforms. His work has reached readers and audiences in multiple languages, including English, Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Bengali, German, Swedish, Danish, Mandarin and Nepali.
He is the author and co-author of several books and monographs, including State of Nepal (co-editor), Media, Conflict and Peace, and Human Rights of Agricultural Labourers in Tamil Nadu. He was also Director of the National Centre for Advocacy Studies, Pune, reflecting his long engagement with public policy and civil society. Alongside journalism, he has been associated with films, serving on selection and preview committees of the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC), the Central Board of Film Certification and the International Film Festival of India (IFFI), including as IFFI catalogue editor.
