Tareq Zahir

When his parents moved from eastern India to Asmara, the capital of Eritrea, then a part of Ethiopia, 5-year-old Tareq Zahir never imagined those early experiences would shape him for life—eventually inspiring him to write the first Indian novel set in Eritrea and Odisha, even if it took nearly 25 years. Tareq Zahir now lives in Beijing, where he works with China Daily, while his family remains scattered across Cuttack and Kolkata.

Shuttled between continents, languages, and cultures from childhood, Sahil lives on the margins. In an India changing quietly through the late ’80s and early ’90s, he is mocked, excluded, and made painfully aware of difference — of food, faith, and origin. It is here that he arrives at a difficult realization: standing apart is not always a strength. Sometimes, all one wants is to be part of the whole. To be normal.
